Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
