McDonald's Netherlands Removes AI-Created Christmas Ad After Backlash.

The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday advert produced with Artificial Intelligence after facing widespread criticism on social media.

The short film was created via generative AI clips and was originally released online for the Dutch branch of McDonald's back on 6 December.

Audience Reaction and Decision to Pull

Soon after it aired, commenters denounced the use of AI in the film. Several described it as "disturbing" and "poorly edited".

"This incident represents an key lesson as we examine the proper application of AI," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was produced for the brand by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It showed a series of scenarios that can go wrong during the Christmas break, under the tagline "not the most wonderful time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Adverts that incorporate AI-created content have emerged as a rising trend among prominent corporations, particularly for the Christmas season.

  • Another beverage giant has also launched consecutive AI-generated Christmas commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Because videos made using generative AI are more likely to distort the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be about a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also sparked fears about automation in the production industry, with some commenters noting it might reduce opportunities for actors.

Defense from the Creators

Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, stood by the project.

She stated, the creation required "seven weeks" and involved producing "numerous versions" which were then crafted afterward "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't an experiment," Bridge asserted. "The result was a film."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly panned, the response for other AI-generated campaigns has been varied.

For instance, a consecutive AI-created Christmas ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis garnered a significant "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.

However, several companies have also encountered scrutiny for using AI in marketing. Italian fashion house Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that some called "lazy" and "disturbing".

The situation underscores the ongoing debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the balance between technological innovation and creative integrity.
